1. Rxh7+ Kxh7 2. Qh5#
This checkmate puzzle is on mate in two with sacrifice. Have a look at the above position. At a corner, the Black king is blocked by his friendly pieces on g7 and h7. The White bishop is attacking g8, and the Black rook is being pinned against the king. To mate in two, the White rook takes the knight on h7 with check and sacrifice… Black has the only answer – the king takes on h7 because the Black rook is being pinned. On the second move, the White queen moves on h5 to deliver mate.

 Checkmate Puzzle 62 Solution

1. Qxh6+ Kxh6 2. Rh3# [1… Kg8 2. Qh8#]
This is the second puzzle on mate in two with sacrifice. To mate in two, the White queen first takes the pawn on h6 with check and sacrifice… Being at check, the Black king has 2 choices: to take the sacrificed queen on h6, or to retreat on g8. If the king takes the sacrificed queen, White delivers mate by moving his rook on h3. If the king retreats on g8, White delivers mate by moving his queen on h8.
