Checkmate Puzzle 35 Solution

1. Rb8+ Bxb8 2. Qf8+ Rg8 3. Qxh6#
[1… Qc8 2. Rxc8+ Bf8 3. Rxf8#]
The aim of 1. Rb8+ is to deflect the Black bishop from f8 for the White queen check. Then the White queen gives check from the safe f8 to force the Black rook on g8 with clearing g7 and getting access to the Black pawn on h6 for mate.

Checkmate Puzzle 36 Solution

1. d7+ Rxd7 (Qxd7) 2. Rb8#
After the check of the White pawn 1. d7+, the Black king has nowhere to move — Black has to take the checking pawn. The true aim of 1. d7+ was to clear the bishop line g3-b8 for the White mating move 2. Rb8#.
