Checkmate Puzzle 41 Solution

1. Bf1+ Kb6 2. Qc7# [1… Ka4 2. Qa3#]
The White rook attacks c6, c5, c4, and the White queen b4. White moves the bishop on f1 to check and attack the square b5. Now the Black king has 2 moves to retreat on b6 or a4 — the queen mates from c7 or a3 supported by rook or pawn.

1. Qh7+ Kf8 2. Qh8+ Bxh8 3. Rxh8#
After 1. Qh7+, the Black king has only one square to retreat on f8. How to checkmate the Black king within the 2 next moves? White sacrifices the queen on h8 to remove the Black bishop and deliver mate on the third move from h8 using a rook.
