 Checkmate Puzzle 5 Solution

1. Rxg8+ Kxg8 2. Rd8#
Easy mate in two. The initial position looks good for delivering the back-rank mate but the Black king is interposed and defended by the Black knight… The White rook on d8 takes the Black knight to check and open the Black king. On the second move, the second rook moves on d8 to deliver the classical back-rank mate.

 Checkmate Puzzle 6 Solution

1. f7+ Kh8 2. Qxh5#
The Black pawn on h5 is undefended… To deliver mate in 2, White moves the f-pawn on f7 to check and attack g8 first. After this, the Black king has the only answer and it must move on h8. On the second move, the White queen delivers mate by taking the undefended Black pawn on h5 – easy mate in two.
