By profession, Leonid Kubbel was a chemical engineer. He had 2 brothers, Arvid and Evgeny, who were chess players. Leonid Kubbel died of starvation in 1942 during the Nazi siege of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) during the World War II. Leonid Kubbel stands at the same line of the famous Russian composers as A. Troitzky, M. Platov, V. Platov.
