1. Bf7 Nc7 2. Bg7# [1… Rc7 2. Rg8#]
This chess puzzle on mate in 2 has two variations and two solutions. First, White makes a brilliant move with his light bishop on f7. By moving his bishop on f7, White has attacked g8 and has created 2 mate threats: 2. Bg7# and 2. Rh8#. The Black knight is attacking the g7-square, but it is shadowing its rook – Black is not able to repulse the both mating threats of White in one move.

This puzzle has the only solution. To mate in 2, first White sacrifices the e7-rook by moving it on e8 to deliver check. After being checked, the Black king has the only legal answer – to accept the sacrifice and take the rook. It is so because the g7-square was attacked by the White queen at check. To mate, White moves his queen on d8… What was the aim of sacrificing the White rook on the first move?
