1. Nf6+ Bxf6 2. Rg7+ Kf8 3. h8=Q#
This puzzle is taken from a game of top-rated chess players: Grandmaster Levon Aronian rated 2750 plays as White against Grandmaster Alexander Grischuk rated 2726. This beautiful checkmate in 3 will help you learn 2 winning ideas in chess… To begin, White delivers check with sacrifice by moving his knight on f6 – and the Black bishop has to take the knight. By having checked and sacrificed, White unblocks his h7-pawn to promote it later on… On his second move, White moves the rook on g7 to deliver the discovered check and to “shadow” the promotion square on h8 – the Black king has to step on f8. At last, White promotes the pawn and mates.

This puzzle is taken from a chess game which was played in 1925 by the famous Alexander Alekhine, the fourth World Chess Champion: He had played as White. This beautiful mate in 3 will also help you learn how to save a major piece for mating attack, by sacrificing a minor one … Have a look at the position – the White queen is being attacked by the g5-pawn. If the queen steps aside on g4, it must be a draw. How to save the queen and mate? What is the way out?.. The way out is a double check (Think why). To begin, White moves his bishop on g6 to deliver double check and save the queen – the Black king has take the bishop. Then, the White queen checks from g5 and mates on the third move as shown in the solution above.
